What to do in the local area?

Hardraw Force
Much of the local walking is through the meadows including along the Pennine Way to the local town of Hawes.
There is the famous Hardraw Force which is an 100ft single drop waterfall and is accessed via the Green Dragon Inn. There is a small charge for visiting and is best viewed after heavy rainfall. It was used in the 1991 film, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner.

Aysgarth Falls
Aysgarth Falls, which also feature in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, is a triple drop water fall on the River Ure and has attracted vistors for hundreds of years. Both William Wordsworth and John Ruskin visited and J M Turner painted the falls. There are well marked walks around the falls from easy strolls to something a little bit more challenging including some circular walks. The falls were also a feature on the television programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the North of England.
Slightly further afield are the Three Peaks of Yorkshire - Whernside, Ingleborough and Penyghent

A Signpost on the Pennine Way
The Pennine Way is a 270 mile walk that starts at Edale in the Peak District, goes along the Pennine Ridge via Malham and Horton in Ribblesdale, to the Yorkshire Dales and through the Northumberland National Park, across the Cheviot Hills finishing at Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders.
The Wensleydale section of the Pennine Way passes through Gayle and Hawes, across the valley to Hardraw and passes round the side of Harris House before climbing over Great Shunner Fell to Thwaite and Swaledale, finally calling at Tan Hill (home of the highest inn in England) before making its way to Northumberland.

The Hawes Ropemakers, WR Outhwaite and Son (now trading as Outhwaite Ltd) is situated 100 metres from the Dales Countryside Museum in the old station yard in Hawes. You can walk through the building and see all sorts of ropes being made - church bell ropes, pet accessories and leads, bannisters, skipping ropes, clothes lines and barrier ropes. Admission is free.

There are innumerable picturesque local villages and hamlets including Bainbridge, Redmire, Carperby, Sedbusk, Burtersett, Thornton Rust.
Villages slightly further away are Muker, Thwaite, Gunnerside, Reeth, all in Swaledale
